Privacy policy

Retelling is a private place for collecting memories from people you care about. This policy explains what we collect, why we use it, and the choices available to you.

Information we collect

We collect account details such as your name, email address, sign-in information, payment status, notification preference, and a Firebase installation identifier for each browser where you enable notifications. When you create or contribute to a story, we store the questions, written answers, voice recordings, project details, and technical information needed to keep the service secure and reliable.

How we use information

We use this information to provide authentication, protected invitation links, story collection, recording storage, transcription, editable book drafts, payment processing, fraud prevention, support, and service improvement. We do not sell personal information or use private stories and recordings for advertising.

Who can access a story

The story owner can access the project and its answers. A contributor can open the specific project associated with an active protected invitation link and submit or review answers there. Owners can also choose to publish an approved, read-only book edition through a separate private reading link. Anyone who receives either type of link may be able to open the content it protects, so links should be shared carefully. Owners can replace or disable either link at any time.

Private reading links

A shared book is a snapshot of the approved text at the time the owner publishes or updates it. It does not include the owner dashboard, contributor controls, or original voice recordings. Private reading pages are marked for exclusion from search engines, but a link can still be forwarded by a recipient. Disabling or replacing the link immediately removes access through the previous link.

Book orders

If you order a hardcover book, we store the order with your account contact details, story reference, book title, and approval details. We use this information to contact you by email and arrange the edition, number of copies, delivery, and payment. Submitting an order does not take payment or automatically send your book to a printer.

Service providers

Retelling relies on trusted providers to operate the service, including Google Firebase and Google Cloud for authentication, hosting, database, storage, and optional analytics; Stripe for payments; OpenAI for voice transcription and book-draft generation; an email delivery provider when email-code sign-in is enabled; and, only with your permission, Meta and TikTok for advertising measurement. Retelling asks the generation service not to retain API inputs for later retrieval, and generated drafts remain subject to owner review. These providers process information under their own security and privacy obligations.

New memory notifications

If you choose to enable browser notifications, Retelling uses Firebase Cloud Messaging to register that browser and alert you when a new answer is added. Lock-screen alerts use generic wording and do not contain a contributor’s name, question, answer, or story details. You can turn notifications off from Settings at any time, which removes the saved browser registrations.

Optional analytics and cookies

With your permission, we use Google Analytics for Firebase, Meta Pixel, and TikTok Pixel only for a small acquisition funnel: a homepage visit, onboarding start and completion, paywall view, checkout start, and successful purchase. These services may process browser and device information, referring or advertising-click information, approximate location, cookie identifiers, and the limited funnel details we send. We do not use them to track dashboard activity, story creation, sharing, answers, recordings, generated books, support, privacy, or terms pages. Retelling does not send names, email addresses, private-link tokens, story text, answers, or recordings to these services. Optional analytics and advertising cookies remain disabled until you choose “Allow optional cookies”. You can withdraw or change your choice at any time through Cookie Settings in your Retelling account or on this Privacy page; withdrawing consent stops future optional collection and removes the first-party analytics and advertising cookies accessible to Retelling.

Retention and deletion

We retain account and story content while the service is being provided or as needed for security, legal, and payment records. Owners can export their stored story data, delete individual recordings or stories, and delete their account from Settings. Deleting an account removes its story content and media; limited payment, fraud-prevention, or legal records may be retained where required. Email support@retelling.co for help with access, correction, export, or deletion.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, restrict, object to, or receive a copy of your personal information. You may also complain to your local data-protection authority. Contact us to exercise these rights.

Security and children

We use access controls, verified authentication, private storage, and encrypted connections. No online service can guarantee absolute security. Retelling is not directed to children under 13, and a parent or guardian should supervise any contribution by a minor.
