Terms of service

These terms apply when you create an account, purchase access, create a story, or contribute an answer. Retelling is currently an early-stage service, so features may change as the product develops.

Using Retelling

You must provide accurate account information, keep access to your account and invitation links secure, and use the service lawfully. You are responsible for deciding whom to invite and for obtaining any consent needed to record, upload, preserve, or share another person’s memories.

Your content

You and your contributors keep ownership of the questions, answers, recordings, and other content submitted to Retelling. You grant Retelling a limited licence to host, transcribe, process, reproduce, and display that content only as needed to operate, secure, and support the service, create the book drafts you request, and display an approved book to recipients of a private reading link you choose to publish.

Generated drafts

Retelling can use automated services to transcribe recordings and turn submitted memories into an editable book draft. Automated output may contain mistakes. The story owner must review and approve a draft before treating it as a finished account of someone’s life, and should not add or publish sensitive claims without the appropriate person’s consent.

Sharing a finished book

The owner may publish an approved text-only edition through a private, read-only link. The owner is responsible for choosing recipients and having permission to share the people and memories included. Anyone with the link may be able to read or forward it. The owner can update the published snapshot, replace the link, or disable access at any time.

Acceptable use

Do not upload unlawful, abusive, infringing, deceptive, or malicious content; impersonate another person; attempt to access someone else’s private story; interfere with the service; or use automated methods to overload or extract data from it.

Payments

Prices and included features are shown before checkout. Payments are processed by Stripe. Unless stated otherwise at checkout, access is sold as a one-time digital purchase rather than a subscription. Hardcover books are an optional, separate purchase at £39, $39 or €39 per copy, in the currency shown when ordering. After approving a digital book, you can order a physical copy from your book tab. Submitting an order does not take payment. We will contact your account email address to arrange the edition, number of copies, delivery, and payment before printing.

Availability and changes

We aim to keep Retelling available and protect its data, but beta software may contain errors or experience interruptions. We may update, add, remove, or limit features and will try to give reasonable notice of material changes that affect paid access.

Disclaimers and liability

Retelling is provided on an “as available” basis to the extent permitted by law. We do not promise that every recording, generated layout, or service connection will be uninterrupted or error-free. Nothing in these terms excludes rights or liability that cannot legally be excluded. Otherwise, our total liability relating to the service will not exceed the amount you paid for Retelling in the twelve months before the event giving rise to the claim.

Ending use

You may stop using Retelling at any time and can use the self-service controls to export stored data or delete recordings, stories, or the account. We may suspend access when reasonably necessary to protect users, comply with law, investigate misuse, or prevent harm.
